Kia ora.
My name is Gemma, and I am an experienced registered structural and cranial Osteopath, offering treatment to your whole family - from newborn babies through to those in their golden years.
With a holistic approach to physical wellness, along with my 21 years of clinical experience, I tailor my treatment programmes to individual need, incorporating massage, stretching, manipulation, and gentle cranio-sacral osteopathy.
Lifestyle changes may also be considered to enable a more effective recovery, with advice on healthy lifestyle choices, work ergonomic improvements, exercise routines, nutrition, and stress management.
Referrals for investigative screening, such as X-rays, or to other health care professionals can also be arranged.
I am an ACC provider.
EXPERIENCE
I am a New Zealand registered Osteopath with over 21 years of clinical experience. I studied at the world leading British School of Osteopathy in London, achieving a Bsc (Hons) Ost. degree in Osteopathy, and have been the principal Osteopath in several successful clinics in the United Kingdom.
I have undertaken further study and development opportunities over these years, including advanced Cranio-Sacral Osteopathy with the prestigious Sutherland Cranial College. I treat a wide range of patients, from new born babies to the elderly.
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is an established, recognised system of diagnosis and treatment that lays its main emphasis on the structural integrity of the body and the way it functions. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, joints, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.
Osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.
Osteopathy can help with:
Back and neck pain
Whiplash
Muscular strains
Joint stiffness
Arthritis
Headaches
Sinusitis
Tendinitis
Disc injuries
Nerve pain
Carpel Tunnel
Pre and post joint hip/knee replacement
Osteopathy for babies and children
Osteopathy has been used for over a century to successfully treat a wide variety of paediatric problems. It is frequently considered the safest and most gentle way to care for common problems in children, including newborns.
Not all babies cope well with the powerful processes of birth as they pass down the birth canal. Problems can arise from too much compression to the cranium and neck causing headaches and recurrent ear infections, and irritations to the nerves causing feeding problems, reflux and irritability. Compression can also affect the gastric nerves causing colic. Tension in the skull can keep the baby in an alert state so the baby has difficulty sleeping.
Babies and children are commonly treated using Cranio-Sacral Therapy. This is a light touch treatment which helps to restore balance in the nervous system, musculo-skeletal system (including the cranial bones) and organ system. Problems are usually resolved with up to six treatments and it is then advised to return for a check-up six to twelve months after.
Osteopathy for babies and children can help with:
- Colic and feeding problems
- Ear infections and glue ear
- Compression of the skull due to a difficult birth
- Disturbances with sleep
- Learning difficulties
- Hyperactivity and behavioural problems
- Constipation
- Asthma
- Scoliosis and postural problems
- Strains and sprains
Osteopathy for those getting older-
Osteopathy is holistic in nature, and many of these conditions causing pain and discomfort can be eased or relieved with gentle osteopathic techniques. Osteopathy focuses on improving mobility and reducing inflammation to enhance overall quality of life. Many people find osteopathy supportive of easing ongoing joint and muscle problems. Others like to have their posture checked, return to prevent problems arising and maintain health and wellbeing.. Advice can be given on exercise and suitable stretching techniques, as well as dietary advice to help maintain healthy bones and joints
Osteopathy for the older adult can help with:
Stiffness and painful joints
Mobility restrictions
Neck or back aches
Digestive problems
Fatigue
Osteopathy and sport injuries-
Osteopathy can help to restore structural balance, improve joint mobility and reduce soft tissue adhesions and restrictions. Regular treatment sessions can enhance peak performance, and reduce the risk of further injury.
